Feeding and Care

Miniature donkeys are very easy to raise. They really are user friendly! Your first care question might be," What do they eat and how much do they eat?" Miniature Donkeys are grazers. So, they will be eating your pasture grass. Coastal Bermuda seems to be the best , but there are many other native grasses in your area of the country ,that will be a good food supply. Get in touch with your county extension agent about the native grass on your land or in your area.  If you have a college in your area call the agricultural department.  Many times they are looking for a farm to bring a class out to . They can tell you all about what is growing in your pasture.

So---"How much hay do you feed?" This can vary, but if you are feeding small square bales a bale will normally be around 50 lbs. When you cut the string or wire the bale of hay will naturally fall into sections, which you will hear people refer to as a flake or a wedge. Recently, it was refered to as a taco. One healthy size wedge will be plenty of hay for one miniature donkey for a day.  As long as you have some natural grazing.

Over feeding treats is where most people get their little donkeys too fat. Could you be a over treat feeder? Well look around you..... Are all your pets over weight?  Could your ranch be called Fat Dog Ranch. If you think you fall into that category limit the amount of horse and mule feed you give as treat and be sure it is a lower protein mix---10 % to 12%.   ( If your Jenny (Mom) is nursing and needs to make more milk,

you can feed her a higher protein treat.  Many times this helps her.)

Also.... always have a good soft mineral block out for your little minis and a salt block too. Whether you are bonding with your mini donkey to make him part of your family or if you are going to put him up for sale take time each day to call him by his name . ...pet him and even teach him tricks.  You will really have a friend and good companion for life.
